Sarah Eltantawi

Sarah Eltantawi - Professor, Writer, and Expert in Islam

Fordham University professor Sarah Eltantawi teaches courses in modern Islam in the school's Department of Theology. She joined Fordham in 2020 after working for over six years as a professor of comparative religion and Islamic studies at The Evergreen State College in Washington State. Alongside her teaching activities, Sarah Eltantawi writes extensively on Islamic politics and culture throughout the world. Her book Shari'ah on Trial: Northern Nigeria's Islamic Revolution has been reviewed in numerous academic journals. She also published scholarly work in newspapers, peer-reviewed journals, and encyclopedias.

In preparation for her career, Dr. Sarah Eltantawi attended the University of California, Berkeley, and earned a bachelor's degree in English and Rhetoric. She completed her graduate studies at Harvard University, where she earned a master's degree in Middle Eastern studies and a PhD in the study of religion. Dr. Eltantawi also completed postdoctoral programs at Brandeis University, the Wissenschaftskolleg zu Berlin, and the University of California, Berkeley.

Currently, Dr. Eltantawi is working on a collection of essays examining contemporary Islam in America and a book on political Islam and its opposition in Egypt. In her free time, she enjoys practicing yoga and spending time outdoors.
